How do odds work in sports betting? A guide for beginners in Myanmar
Odds are the numbers next to every selection on a betting page. They decide two things: how much a winning bet pays and how likely the bookmaker thinks the outcome is. Once you can read them, a coupon stops being a guess and becomes a calculation you can check yourself. This guide explains what odds show, the three formats, how to work out profit and probability, why a margin is built into every price and why prices move. Odds are listed in the pre-match sports betting line and keep updating during a game in the live betting section.
What are odds and what do they show?
Odds show how much a stake grows if the bet wins.
They appear in the pre-match line and in live betting, while the event is in progress.
The size of the odds hints at likelihood: the higher the odds, the less likely the bookmaker believes the outcome is.
Bets at very high odds are chosen less often, so there are fewer winning bets among them.
In the football betting line, one match carries separate odds for a home win, a draw and an away win. A basketball event such as the NBA Finals carries odds on each team, and the same rule applies: the favourite has the lower number.
Main odds formats and how to read them
Bookmakers use three formats: decimal, fractional and American. They describe the same price in different ways, so the profit formula changes with the format.
Decimal (European) odds
Written as a decimal number, for example 2.50.
The clearest format for beginners, because it shows the total payout directly.
Net profit = stake × odds − stake.
Fractional and American odds: what is the difference?
Fractional odds are common in the United Kingdom. They show the net profit relative to the stake. Net profit = stake × (numerator ÷ denominator).
American odds use plus and minus values. A minus sign marks the favourite and a plus sign marks the underdog.
For positive American odds: net profit = stake × (odds ÷ 100).
For negative American odds: net profit = stake × (100 ÷ |odds|).
American odds can feel unfamiliar at first, which is why beginners are usually better off starting with decimal odds.
How to calculate net profit from odds: worked examples
Odds 3.4 and a stake of 5,000 MMK: the payout is 5,000 × 3.4 = 17,000 MMK, so the net profit is 12,000 MMK.
Odds 2.5 and a stake of 5,000 MMK: the payout is 12,500 MMK, so the net profit is 7,500 MMK.
Decimal odds need one multiplication to show the payout, which is why most bookmakers display them. To try the calculation on real events, register or log in and open the line.
How bookmakers set odds: probability and margin
Bookmakers estimate the chance of each outcome with analysts, statistics and probability theory. Team form and injuries are part of the picture. The implied probability behind any price is easy to find: probability (%) = 100 ÷ odds.
A margin is added on top. It is the bookmaker's income and it is built into the odds, so it is earned whichever outcome happens. The table shows illustrative odds for a football match and the probability each one implies.
Outcome | Odds | Implied probability |
|---|---|---|
Home win (1) | 1.25 | 80% |
Draw (X) | 2.0 | 50% |
Away win (2) | 4.5 | 22.2% |
How to calculate the margin yourself
For two outcomes the formula is margin = (100 ÷ K1 + 100 ÷ K2) − 100, where K1 and K2 are the odds on each outcome. Add a third term for a market with three outcomes. When the implied probabilities add up to more than 100%, the excess is the margin.
Why odds change: line movement explained
Odds move when news about the teams arrives, when the match date gets closer and when the game itself develops. In live betting they change constantly, which you can follow in live football betting.
Line loading is the other common cause. When many bets arrive on one outcome, the bookmaker lowers the odds on it to reduce the risk of large payouts. Watching how odds move helps you keep control of your deposit.
How to use odds knowledge: tips for beginners
These are the mistakes that come up most often:
Choosing only low odds. Favourites do not always win.
Searching only for value bets, which carry a high risk.
Betting only on favourite teams without studying the others.
Not following price changes. Push notifications in the mobile app make this easier.
Not understanding the formats. Start with decimal odds.
Odds above 3.0 are risky for a beginner. Betting is entertainment, not a way to earn income. Offers can carry their own conditions on stakes and odds, so read the first deposit bonus rules and check the promotions page before accepting one.
Odds belong to sports markets. Casino titles work on different mechanics, so if you also play in the casino section or on slots, keep their budget separate. Quick-result titles are collected in the games section.
Bet responsibly. 1xBet supports responsible gambling: set your limits and play within your means. Betting is for adults only.
